Sumi-e

I studied traditional Chinese and Japanese brush painting from 2011 to 2016.

“I paint because what appears to us as the world wants to be known.” - Jan Zaremba

I studied Chinese brush painting and calligraphy for 2 years with Qingxiong Ma, then Japanese brush painting for over 2 years with master Jan Zaremba. Brush painting was the beginning of my continuing interest in eastern and especially Japanese aesthetics. It is about distilling the essence of the subject into a handful of decisive strokes and speaks to my preoccupations with simplicity and clarity.

The process of brush painting uses the whole body, and depends on speed, mental preparation, vision, and conviction. I love the challenge, the natural subject matter, and the meditative quality of the process.
